The Residents “River of Crime” video
Oscar and I made a video for an online community art project from The Residents and MOMA.
It was be screened at the New York Museum of Modern Art on October 19th-22nd 2006 and was hosted on the MOMA website (but not any longer :P).
Episode #1 – “The Kid Who Collected Crimes” (Excerpt)
MOMA website:
“You are invited to take part in an online project with The Museum of Modern Art and The Residents. The famously anonymous multimedia visual artists and musicians seek video to go with their audio.
Between August 15 and September 18, visit The Residents’ Web site to download the audio excerpt from The River of Crime episode 1 and read the directions for submitting your clip.
The Residents and MoMA curator Barbara London will judge submissions. On October 1, thirty shortlist videos will be posted on YouTube.com.
London and the Residents will select the final videos for screening at MoMA on October 19. YouTube popularity will be taken into consideration in the judging process. On October 20, the selections will be posted here.”
Our video’s aesthetics are inspired by early Cubism/Surrealism ala Picasso’s costumes for the 1917 ballet “Parade” and film noir.
Since the project is designed for mobile video, we decided simple, high-contrast designs would work best. Simplicity was the main idea and all material was scavenged from scrap lying around the studio.

Great stuff! Reminds me of Stan Ridgeway, Sally Cruikshank and the Brothers Quay all at once. The Residents should love it! Your brother, Charlie

Fast paced, even for such a short video. Really sucks you in. Tension, excitement, mystery. Like what happened; electric chair?? Love the visuals, reminiscient of the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. What’s with the three fishes? I have vague recollection of some meaning, but it’s lost to me right now. Great stuff, as usual.
