The Porn Pix Public Exhibition
Pixelated pornography was drawn on the side of the Konstmuseet Public Museum and viewers were asked to guess the theme of the images.
They were then given this url.
Götaplatsen Square, Göteborg, Sweden
Oct 6, 2005
As part of a public intervention workshop, I embarked with chalk and charcoal to embellish the famous Götaplatsen Square, a symbol of Gothenburg, with pixelated pornography. What will the perception be? What kinds of ideas will people impose upon my intentionally vague imagery?
I drew my pictures on 5 different squares on the stone wall of the square, part of the city museum or Konstmuseet. The charcoal and chalk I had did not last very long on the rough surface, so I was not able to achieve the detail I wanted beyond the first two pictures, but I did have print outs of the originals I worked from.
While playing some original music to fit the theme of the exhibition, I aksed passersby to study all the images and tell me their collective theme as well as fill out some statistical information. In return for their time, participants had a chance of winning 100 Swedish Kronor if their answer was close enough.
Every participant was given a small slip of paper with this web address. In this way, they could log on, have their curiosity satiated, and wonder more about what they see in public. Is that sign suggestive of something beyond its clear intention? How much deemed “publicly unacceptable” is actually shown in public without much notice? Are street artists/students exhibitionists in a deeper sense?
